Robert Eggers’ Labyrinth Sequel Is Officially Happening

Robert Eggers’ post-Nosferatu life just got a lot busier. On the day his 2024 horror hit learned it had earned four Oscar nominations (in Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling), and the day after fans learned Eggers will be tackling a 13th century-set werewolf movie for a Christmas 2026 release, we now have confirmation that his previously teased Labyrinth project is indeed happening.

A Labyrinth follow-up has been in the works since at least 2017—when Fede Alvarez (Alien: Romulus) was floated as a potential director, as was Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange, The Black Phone). But you have to guess the project’s roots go back even further, as Jim Henson’s 1986 musical fantasy starring Jennifer Connelly, David Bowie, and an array of muppets has remained a beloved favorite in the decades since its release. Today’s news, via Deadline, tells us that Eggers “has closed his deal to write and direct a new Labyrinth for TriStar Pictures.”

There’s no plot details yet, but the trade reports “the film is a sequel, rather than a remake” and that Eggers is co-writing with Sjón, his past collaborator on 2022’s The Northman and his current collaborator on 2026’s Werwulf. Additionally, “Chris and Eleanor Columbus will produce alongside Lisa Henson, with Brian Henson executive producing.”

Even with no more intel than the above—might Connelly return to play an adult version of her reluctant teen heroine?—a Labyrinth sequel would certainly signal a departure for Eggers. It would be a film still in the highly detailed fantasy-horror realms he’s comfortable inhabiting, but presumably with a more family-friendly or at least more gentle story behind it. Jim Henson did spark a nightmare or two with The Dark Crystal, let’s not forget.
