The Next Avatar Series Has a New Name and a New Hero

Eleven years after The Legend of Korra came to an end, the cycle of the Avatar continues one more: after years of teasing and planning, Nickelodeon is ready to introduce the world to a brand new Avatar series.

Deadline reports that Nickelodeon and Avatar Studios have announced that the next major project is Avatar: Seven Havens, a 26-episode, 2D animated TV series that will mark the next major chronological leap in the Avatar timeline after the events of The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra. Franchise co-creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will develop the series.

Seven Havens will be set in an apocalyptic world devastated by a cataclysm that has torn the both the human and spirit worlds asunder, with the remnants of civilization holding out from total annihilation in the titular strongholds throughout the world. A young female Earthbender, currently unnamed, will star as the next inheritor of the powers of the Avatar—the transcendental re-incarnating hero of destiny who commands the power to simultaneously wield the four elemental bending arts of Fire, Earth, Air, and Water—only to find that in this cataclysmic age, the mantle of the Avatar is a portent of doom and destruction, rather than a savior.

On the run as she is pursued by both human and spirit forces, the new Avatar will be joined in the series by her long-lost twin sibling, as they uncover their own mysterious origins and links to the Avatar Cycle, and find a way to save their world before the Seven Havens collapse entirely.

“When we created the original series, we never imagined we’d still be expanding the world decades later,” DiMartino and Konietzko said in a statement provided by Nickelodeon. “This new incarnation of the Avatarverse is full of fantasy, mystery, and a whole new cast of amazing characters. Get ready to take another epic and emotional adventure!”

Seven Havens will, in the style of Last Airbender and Korra before it, be split into seasons referred to as “Books,” both comprised of 13 half-hour episodes. It’s currently unknown if Seven Havens‘ 26-episode run is all that is planned, or if there is potential for the series to continue beyond the currently planned two seasons. The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra ran for three and four seasons, respectively.

The announcement of Seven Havens is just one of several projects that is now officially in the works at Avatar Studios, the production house established by DiMartino, Konietzko, and Nickelodeon in 2021 to be the home of a series of upcoming projects within the world of the animated series. Aside from Seven Havens, a planned trilogy of animated movies is in the works, beginning with one set to focus on Aang and his friends from The Last Airbender after the events of the series, as well as potential other projects that will leverage CG animation over Avatar‘s traditional 2D style.
